Looking at Nix’s performance over the last two games (and in three of the past four) suggests that he’s hitting his stride at the right time to take over as the new Heisman fave. The former Auburn QB has been so much better since arriving in Oregon last season. Another game like he had in Week 11 will have him knocking on the door of his career high in passing yards, set last season.

DeVonta Smith is the last non-QB to win the Heisman Trophy, when he was on the Alabama Crimson Tide.

But strangely, in his third season — the year in which wide receivers traditionally break out — he hasn’t been as good. Smith hasn’t been targeted as much and has seen his YPR dip for the second straight season. In Week Seven he did get 11 targets, but only managed five receptions for just 44 yards, and then last week he had a season low five targets — for the fourth time through seven games. For context, that matches the total number of times he had five targets or fewer all of last season.
