The Council’s second episode ended with a cliffhanger regarding missing matriarch Sarah de Richet. The third episode, Ripples, picks up immediately where this left off, but the result is mainly exposition and some band-aided explanations.

Even if you’re not an anime fan, it’s plain to see that Forgotton Anne is one of the most visually striking games to come out in recent memory. The lush colour palette combined with lively characters and steampunk design makes even the most mundane elements vibrant.

As Rogue came late in the PS3/Xbox 360 cycle, its graphics are natively a tad bit better than the earlier entries in the series. If you put a side-by-side comparison with the original game and this remastered version, however, you’re not going to see much of a difference other than slightly more detail in the lighting and environment effects.

The narrative is built around a secret society in America’s early history, including such notable figures as George Washington. As the mystery is uncovered, Louis will interact with both people and the world around him. In some cases, you’ll have dialogue options requiring Focus Points, which can be re-earned by the standard RPG fare of consumables or by identifying an NPC’s weaknesses.

For all its legacy value, Secret of Mana is a mixed bag from a modern perspective. The gist of it, drawing from the SNES era, is a mix between the top-down exploration of Zelda and the party system from the early Final Fantasy games.
