Jacob Theodosiou (in green jersey) isn’t likely to see a ton of action for Duke. (Loyola University Maryland Athletics)
This week, the NCAA approved the new five-year, age-based eligibility model; Virginia Tech found its new AD, luring Brian White away from Florida Atlantic; and Iowa State – citing financial pressures – will now sell booze for basketball and football games. Other college basketball stories we’re following include…
Loyola Maryland Loses Top Steal Man
The Loyola Maryland Greyhounds have definitely fallen on dark times in recent years. Since moving to the Patriot League in 2013-14, they have yet to post a winning record, and their NCAA tourney drought has reached 14 seasons.
The outlook hasn’t gotten any rosier since third leading scorer and top steals man Jacob Theodosiou has transferred to Duke, where he’s projected to have a reserve role.
The guard had more issues with turnovers in his junior season, but his offensive game picked up thanks to dramatically improved shooting. As part of an impressive haul through the portal, Theodosiou could emerge as a key member of the second unit for the Blue Devils, although he’ll have competition from some top recruits. Realistically, depending on how quickly the kids adapt to the collegiate game, he could find himself near the back of the rotation.
Theodosiou is there to essentially replace Cameron Sheffield, who barely played for Duke over the last two seasons. Still, as a kid from Waterloo, Ont. (see video below), Theodosiou has come a long way to even garner interest from a program as prestigious as Duke, so kudos to him even if he spends all season getting splinters. It’s also nice to see him suit up for Team Canada at the FIBA U23 3×3 Nations League.
Doing the Huskies Proud
In the two seasons since the Washington Huskies moved into the Big 10, it’s been tough sledding, although they barely missed out on a .500 campaign in 2025-26. Still, Washington’s tournament drought has now reached seven years and given that they are just +15000 to win the 2027 NCAA championship as per FanDuel, there’s clearly still a ways to go for this program.
Well, at least the Huskies can be proud that their leading scorer/rebounder wound up as a lottery pick. German forward Hannes Steinbach was a one-and-done, taken 14th overall by the Charlotte Hornets.
In his lone season at Washington, as a full-time starter he racked up plenty of buckets and showed a decent touch from outside, although that wasn’t a big part of his game. Steinbach racked up a decent number of points from the line, en route to an 18.5 PPG scoring output, but where he really dominated was on the glass, pulling down 11.8 boards per game to lead the entire country.
In fact, when looking at NBA big men’s final season of college basketball, he ranks in the 95th percentile in terms of offensive rebound percentage. Charlotte was an excellent rebounding team last season; next season it could be the best in the NBA with Steinbach on board.
Beyond this rebounding prowess, the kid also has a nice offensive touch, flashing an impressive fadeway jumper. While the outside game has a ways to go, is Steinbach the next great hope for German basketball since Dirk Nowitzki retired in 2019? (Then again, Moritz Wagner – a player that Steinbach has been compared to – may have something to say about that.)
