Bo Nix has surged up the Heisman Trophy watch list for the Oregon Ducks.

College Football Today: Bo Nix Surging for Ducks

Looking at Nix’s performance over the last two games (and in three of the past four) suggests that he’s hitting his stride at the right time to take over as the new Heisman fave. The former Auburn QB has been so much better since arriving in Oregon last season. Another game like he had in Week 11 will have him knocking on the door of his career high in passing yards, set last season.

Puka Nacua is tracking towards NFL rookie records for the Los Angeles Rams.

NFL Today: Puka Nacua Chasing History

Yes, Nacua has slowed down in recent games (topping 43 yards just once over the last four), but should still be a top 20 WR in the second half, and will soon be reaching the 1,000-yard mark. Not bad for a dude whose college career started very slowly, but given his pedigree as a stud in high school (winning the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year in 2018-19), what he’s accomplished isn’t totally out of the blue.

Frank Reich has relinquished play calling duties for the Carolina Panthers.

NFL Today: Thomas Brown Takes Over Play Calling in Carolina

After managing just three wins last season, the Texans played .500 football over the first six games of the season to match that total. And while the playoffs are still quite possible for Houston, two losses in the last three — including coming off its bye and losing to Carolina last week to fall under .500 — hurt badly. Still, with the remaining schedule including games against Cincinnati, Jacksonville, the Jets, Cleveland and the Titans (twice), the Texans very much remain in control of their own fate.

DeVonta Smith is the last non-QB to win the Heisman Trophy, when he was on the Alabama Crimson Tide.

College Football Today: QBs Continue to Dominate the Heisman

But strangely, in his third season — the year in which wide receivers traditionally break out — he hasn’t been as good. Smith hasn’t been targeted as much and has seen his YPR dip for the second straight season. In Week Seven he did get 11 targets, but only managed five receptions for just 44 yards, and then last week he had a season low five targets — for the fourth time through seven games. For context, that matches the total number of times he had five targets or fewer all of last season.

Terron Armstead could be sidelined for a while for the Miami Dolphins.

NFL Today: Tua Tagovailoa’s Rapid Rise

In his sophomore season in 2021, he showed some huge improvements, although interceptions were an issue. Last year, the Fins set Tagovailoa more free, allowing him to throw the ball 400 times for the first time and he rewarded their faith with a huge uptick in touchdown passes. And so far in 2023, he continues to improve, getting sacked less frequently while showing his greatest accuracy yet and continued improvements in his yards per attempt as part of the nearly unstoppable offensive machine that Miami has built.
