Welcome back to another week of Fantasy baseball waiver wire recommendations. The season is winding down, but there’s plenty of excitement to come and we’ve entered the portion of the year when teams are calling up reinforcements and potentially resting or shutting down key players. So remain vigilant, my peeps!

This week, the Braves are considering offering Tim Tebow a minor league deal; Joe Nathan is back in the bigs, having been recalled by the Giants — his original team; and Yasiel Puig has been brought back up by the Dodgers and paid immediate dividends.

And now let’s get to this week’s picks…

Greg Garcia, 2B/3B/SS, St. Louis Cardinals (ESPN: 0.5 per cent; CBS: 1 per cent): Garcia heads into action Sunday riding a streak of eight straight times reaching base. This utility man qualifies at three infield positions, making him an ideal bench player in very deep NL-only leagues. The fact Garcia has delivered five hits over the last three games doesn’t hurt, either. He simply continues to improve as a hitter, and frankly, we’d be interested to see what he can do with a larger role. Just be aware that Garcia is currently experiencing some knee soreness (see video below).

Jose De Leon, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers (ESPN: NA; CBS: 43 per cent): All the injuries on the Dodger rotation have forced the team to be creative, and they have now turned to prospect De Leon to make his MLB debut on Sunday. Judging by his stellar work at Triple-A (7-1, 2.61 in 16 starts with 11.6 K/9), this kid is ready for the challenge. We love the fact that De Leon has improved his ERA with the move from Double-A to Triple-A, but it’s worth noting that his FIP numbers between those two levels are a lot closer. Still, his recall is a very Fantasy relevant event, so pounce while you can.

Jharel Cotton, SP, Oakland Athletics (ESPN: NA; CBS: 3 per cent): Another young pitching prospect set to make his MLB debut (on Wednesday) is Cotton, who was acquired by the A’s from the Dodgers in the Josh Reddick trade. Cotton’s future is probably in the bullpen, but for now he’s being given a chance to start, and he’s looked a lot better since arriving in the Oakland system. He’s already at a career high in innings, so the A’s will probably baby him a bit down the stretch, but there’s a chance he could emerge as a decent asset this month given his strikeout potential. We do worry about his gopheritis, however.

Jake Marisnick, OF, Houston Astros (ESPN: 0.2 per cent; CBS: 1 per cent): Former Blue Jay prospect Marisnick has had a very tough season as his power has really waned. It’s crappy timing for the youngster considering how many good outfield prospects are coming down the pike for the Astros. However, Marisnick is showing signs of life. He slashed a pair of hits Saturday including a two-run dinger — his third jack over the last dozen games. If Marisnick can finish strong, he should put himself in good position to at least break camp with a job next year. It’s worth grabbing him in very deep AL-only leagues to see if he can get it done.

Derek Holland, SP, Texas Rangers (ESPN: 15 per cent; CBS: 28 per cent): Holland has always been a pretty good command pitcher, but he’s struggled in that regard more than ever this season. Yet even while he again failed to show strong command in his start on Saturday, he still managed to record a third straight quality outing. Holland has stayed relatively healthier this season, and while his strikeout rate is at a career worst, he looks poised to finish up strong so give him a look if you need pitching help.

Seth Lugo, RP, New York Mets (ESPN: 10.9 per cent; CBS: 14 per cent): Another hurler that could help down the stretch — and one that very few could have anticipated being useful — is Lugo. Since being moved into the rotation for the Mets two and a half weeks ago, he’s been really good, tossing two quality starts in three tries with the third outing resulting in five shutout innings. This rookie has bounced back and forth between the Mets and Triple-A in recent months, but now the 34th round pick from 2011 is likely here to stay with all the health woes the Mets’ rotation is undergoing. Lugo is a sneaky pick that could offer value in all formats over the final month.

Others to Consider

Kevin Kiermaier, OF, Tampa Bay Rays (ESPN: 5.5 per cent; CBS: 14 per cent): Tampa Bay’s 31st round pick in 2010 had a decent August and is riding that into September with a seven-game hit streak.

C.J. Cron, 1B, Los Angeles Angels (ESPN: 27.6 per cent; CBS: 39 per cent): Let’s not forget just two years ago Cron was one of the Angels’ top prospects, so his current 10-game hit streak and an overall productive season tells us the breakout is coming real soon. If he stays healthy next year, he’ll be a major sleeper.

Ichiro Suzuki, OF, Miami Marlins (ESPN: 2.3 per cent; CBS: 5 per cent): With Pablo Ozuna hurting and out for the next few days, Ichiro is getting more PT, so hopefully he can shake his recent slump (two hits Saturday was a step in the right direction). Last year, we ranked Ichiro 95th in our Outfield Rankings, and while he enjoyed a productive August, he did nothing in September, and barely finished up as a top 150 outfielder. Ichiro has done much better this season as a part-time player.

Now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments below who your favourite Fantasy baseball waiver wire pick of the week is.

Looking for 40 steals from your middle infielder? Altuve is one of the precious few that can deliver that. It doesn’t hurt that he’s also enjoying a career year, even if he was slumping as the first half ended.

The Wire Troll: Bud Norris Seeks Redemption

We’re not saying Chisenhall has been hot over the past month, we’re just saying we saw two hobbits throw a ring at him. The lefty is hitting .560 with three homers over his last five games, and a cool .342 BA over the last month. Chisenhall is hustling righties as usual, but has also been respectable in limited time against the southpaws. He has filled in admirably for the injured Michael Brantley and played a large role in the Indians’ recent historic win streak.

The Wire Troll: Oh My, a New Closer in St. Louis?

But if Moya keeps up his current torrid pace, he could finally be up for good. Since his call up, the 6’7”, 260-pound mammoth is hitting .370/.433/.778 with three homers through seven games. Moya’s current BABIP is extremely high, but even in Triple-A he was sporting a .298 BA, a product of much better plate discipline compared to previous campaigns. Even if his playing time gets cut dramatically once Martinez returns in 4-to-6 weeks, the power potential from Moya is more than worth your attention.

The Wire Troll: Jose Peraza Burning Up the Basepaths

A natural shortstop, Flores’ ability to play every infield position not only helps guarantee him PT, but makes him valuable as a multi-position eligibility player. Take a look at him in deeper leagues if you need infield help.
