Contest: Win a Silver Freddie Freeman Coin

August 3, 2018 | by RotoRob | Comments (10)
20180731_14460020180731_144610You can win this silver Freddie Freeman coin!

Current MLB stars like Mike Trout, Mookie Betts and Francisco Lindor are among the 30 players in the first ever set of collectible trading coins from Baseball Treasure, a new company headed by lifelong Red Sox fans Rick Canale and John Connor.

These one-ounce copper coins are mounted in full-colour cardboard and include one player for every major league team. Sold in packages of three (US$19.99), six (US$39.99) or nine (US$59.99), or available in a box of 36 packs (US$249.99), the coins have been fully-licensed based on a deal approved by MLB and MLBPA.

Packs are sold at sports retailers such as Modell’s, within several team gift shops and through every MLB team’s online store.

On top of the 30-coin copper set for 2018 Baseball Treasure MLB Coins, there are random silver and gold coin inserts. The odds of getting a silver coin is one in 432, while the gold coin (retail value US$2,000) is one in 21,600.

Thanks to Baseball Treasure, one lucky RotoRob.com reader will win a free Freddie Freeman silver coin. More on that in a moment…

Canale and Conner, who have been friends for 35 years, chose to go with coins over cards for two reasons: cards were not an option because of existing exclusivity agreements, and the pair already had access to a mint in Massachusetts (doesn’t everyone?).

This helped facilitate the deal, and when MLB was pitched on it, “they loved the idea,” Canale says.

The coins, which resemble mini Hall of Fame plaques, had a first run of 300,000, so with just 10,000 of each player, there’s some rarity here. First run coins are identified with a number one under the logo. If the product takes off with major retailers, Canale says a second pressing is planned.

Going forward, he says Baseball Treasure has plenty of expansion plans.

Next season, they again plan to do at least one player per team, but expand the overall set to around 50 players to allow for some team’s second stars such as Chris Sale and Shohei Ohtani.

“Eventually, we’re going to add some Hall of Famers to the set, too,” Canale says.

For instance, Baseball Treasure is currently talking to Jackie Robinson‘s people about a coin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth next year.

Although the inaugural set was delayed until June, the company hopes to annually release new sets in April going forward. That will be followed by an update around August which will include top prospects and rookies.

Going forward, the set could expand beyond 50 cards.

But why stop there? Canale says they hope to shift into other areas, such as Harry Potter, Mario characters, Marvel superheroes or Star Wars.

“It’s limitless where we could go.”
