Fantasy Notes: Is Bartlett Building a Future?

In today’s Fantasy Notes, we look at Jason Bartlett’s revitalization, Carlos Silva getting his act together and Kyle Lohse’s smooth transition to the bullpen, among other things.

  • Jason Bartlett has performed well since returning from the minors, batting .305 through 95 at-bats, and getting on base at a good clip (.400). So has he cemented his place as the Twins’ shortstop of the future? Well, the fact that Trevor Plouffe is struggling at High-A Fort Myers certainly provides Bartlett with plenty of time to establish himself. But from a Fantasy standpoint, there are a couple of areas we’d like to see improvement in. Firstly, although Bartlett’s OBP is healthy, he’s actually walking less often than he did last year. But of greater concern is that even though he’s been given the go ahead to run, he’s stolen just one base, getting caught twice. Combine that with Bartlett’s complete lack of power, and you have the makings of an empty .300 hitter.
  • Twins starter Carlos Silva looks like he’s ever so slowly getting his act together after what has been, to date, a horrific 2006. If he can reduce his homers allowed and cut his hit rate, we might see a Silva in the second half more resembling the 2005 version.
  • While we’re prattling on about Twin hurlers, how about the transformation of Kyle Lohse from starter to reliever? This guy was absolute pitching anathema as a starter, with an ERA close to 9.00 and a 24 K/19 BB ratio in 38 1/3 IP. Mercifully, Minnesota made him a reliever instead of just cutting him altogether. So what’s Lohse done since? How about a sub-3.75 ERA with 20 K/ 5 BB in 19 1/3 IP? He’s even starting to regain his long-lost value in very deep AL-only leagues.
  • If Shannon Stewart is in fact done for the year as is being suggested, Jason Kubel’s role on the Twins has been solidified. However, bear in mind that Kubel has been having knee issues, so he could wind up on the DL at some point as well.
  • Aaron Guiel has provided a bit of pop for the Yanks, but let’s get real. This Canadian outfielder is just keeping the seat warm for whoever New York deals for in the next couple of weeks. Guiel’s been a trendy pickup in AL-only leagues recently, but offers limited help and comes with a definite shelf life, so why bother?

Fantasy Notes: Nathan Finds his Niche

July 2, 2006 | by RotoRob | Comments (0)
Of 17 his starts this season, 16 have been quality outings. Saturday, he only lasted four innings and was shelled for 11 hits and six runs by the Twins. Bear in mind that he took a line drive off his pitching forearm in his previous start. Capuano says it wasn’t a factor in this game, but obviously something wasn’t quite right. Of course, nothing is going right for opponents of the Twins these days. That’s nine straight wins now and 17 of 18 for the boys from Minnesota. At home, they have a 12-game run going. It’s something to think about if your starters are facing Minny.
