Fantasy Notes: Pujols in a Slump?

In today’s notes, among other things, we discuss Albert Pujols being in a slump — relatively speaking; Mark Grudzielanek‘s chances of being Fantasy worthy in the second half; and David Eckstein‘s slump and how you should handle it.

  • Albert Pujols hasn’t had a multiple-hit game since Friday. This is as close as you’ll see to a slump for him. Things are so bad, he even got the day off on Wednesday. Cut the stiff!
  • Mark Grudzielanek got a vote of confidence when Tony Graffanino was dealt away from the Royals, but Grudzy is just 1 for his last 13. Overall, however, Grudzielanek has been a much better bet than last month, so he looks like a decent play at second in AL-only leagues assuming he stays healthy.
  • David Eckstein‘s current 3-for-28 drought has dropped him below .300 for the first time since May 9. On June 11, he was batting .329. He’s been a slightly better second half player in recent years, so ride it out.
  • It’s been over a week since Scott Rolen‘s last extra-base hit and his slugging percentage has dropped 39 points since July 5. But if you own him in a keeper league you’re still thrilled he’s over his shoulder woes of a year ago. At this stage of 2005, Rolen’s season was already done.
  • Because Reggie Sanders is still on the DL, and not eligible to come off until August 5, there’s almost no chance he’ll be dealt before the July 31 deadline. That doesn’t mean he won’t be moved in August, however. The Yanks (surprise, surprise) are said to be looking at Sanders as Plan B should they fail to land Bobby Abreu. Sanders’ value may rise with the Yanks just on the basis of more runs and more RBI opportunities in a more potent offense. He currently has very little value in mid-sized mixed leagues.
