Fantasy Notes: Who Takes Over in Philly?

Bobby Abreu could soon be dealt by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Rumours persist that Bobby Abreu is on the trading block. (Alchetron.com)

Today, we check in with Fantasy notes about what will happen in the Phillie outfield, a sneaky play in the Philadelphia bullpen, and a top Phillie prospect.

  • Incessant chatter in Philly about the impending trade of either Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell will lead the astute Fantasy owner to think about which Phillie will benefit from the departure of one of those pair. About a month ago, smart money suggested that Shane Victorino needed a full-time gig. But he’s gone just 2-for-28 over the past three weeks — hardly the numbers of someone auditioning for a bigger gig. So the pendulum has swung in favour of David Dellucci, who’s having a solid year and possesses good on-base skills. The only problem there is Dellucci couldn’t get a hit against a southpaw with a tree trunk, so he’s better suited as a platoon player. Luckily, Victorino hits lefties slightly better than righties. So we suppose the best bet is a platoon, a situation that would increase Dellucci’s value to some extent, but really render both players as Fantasy non factors. We still really like the switch-hitting Victorino’s chances to be a lead-off hitter down the road.
  • While we’re looking at the Phils, how about reliever Geoff Geary and his six vulture wins? He allows way too many baserunners to be useful, but his ERA is good (3.25) and if you’re desperate for wins, you can bet he’s available in all but the deepest NL-only leagues.
  • Continuing the Philly theme, the club’s first round pick this year, Kyle Drabek, has been named EA Sports National Player of the Year. His senior season — 14-0, 1.00 ERA, 155 Ks, 34 BBs — capped a tremendous high school career as a two-way star. The son of former Pirate great Doug Drabek, Kyle went 28-1 over his last two prep seasons. He was roughed around in his first pro start for the GCL Phillies, but is a name to remember over the long haul.
