2011 RotoRob MLB Draft Kit: Relief Pitcher Rankings

He was a workhorse last year, and even though his WHIP rose slightly, he was able to cut his ERA by giving up just one freaking homer all season long. Mr. Stingy doesn’t like when fans get a souvenir, apparently. Bell’s strikeout rate has risen the past two years, something Fantasy owners aren’t likely to complain about, but it’s also meant that it’s taking him longer to get through innings, and that’s something that could take a toll down the stretch. As good as Bell has been as a closer, he’s someone that could be traded and wind up in a less significant role on a contender. Food for thought.

MLB Power Rankings: August 12

After a couple week’s absence of the Power Rankings we’re back, and the most surprising team is the Toronto Blue Jays with 59 wins, enough to be a contender in other divisions, but in baseball’s best division, the Jays sit 10 games back in the AL East, trailing the Yankees, Rays, and Red Sox. Another surprise is that the race for the NL Central between the Cardinals and the Reds is still so close. I expected the Cardinals to take a bigger lead after the All-Star break, but it seems as if the Reds deserve more credit than they were given as they are showing no signs of packing it in.

Don’t forget about these players, who sometimes fall through the cracks on your cheat sheets. Just because they don’t fit anywhere else doesn’t mean they don’t have value; however, make sure you understand they are locked in to your DH spot, so if you grab one of these dudes, you may need some position flexibility elsewhere.

Video Game Review: MLB 10 The Show

Pitching is handled via the same meter system I first remember seeing in EA’s MVP Baseball series during the original Xbox days. It was great then and still holds up well despite minimal advancement. You start the process by selecting which pitch you’re going to throw, then tap X to begin your delivery, which causes the meter to start filling. As it nears the top you’ll see a sweet spot to get optimal power on your pitch — stop the meter too soon and you’ll throw softly, let it to go too far and you’ll overthrow the pitch. After it fills all the way a line will move back down where you’ll once again have a target area to hit. The closer you get to that point the more accurate you’ll be. It’s all about timing.

2010 RotoRob MLB Draft Kit: Top 10 Sources of Cheap Power

When their draft enters its final rounds, these speed-hungry owners find themselves staring at a team fleet of foot yet feeble of stick. Immediate action is needed, but the big-time sluggers are long gone, and the Fantasy budget is wearing paper-thin. What to do, what to do? Glad you asked.

MLB Draft Review: 2001 Part Four

The White Sox drafted Honel based on the fact that he threw a devastating knuckle-curve ball with great command and a fastball that hit the mid-90s. His stuff lead the Sox to believe that he was going to be a top of the rotation starter. Honel played the part well, moving steadily through the system until 2004 when injuries set in. Tendinitis limited him to four appearances in 2004 and when he came back in 2005, he wasn’t the same pitcher, as he compiled a 5.88 ERA in 93 innings. The following year was another lost season for Honel as he underwent Tommy John surgery. After surgery, Honel struggled to get his fastball back, pitching mostly in the high 80s range. After the 2007 season, Honel retired briefly, before signing with with the St. Louis Cardinals organization soon thereafter. Unfortunately, Honel had nothing left and he never made it through the season with the Cardinals Double-A club. After the Cardinals released him, Honel shifted to Independent Ball, joining the Edmonton Capitals of the Golden League. He had a fine year split between Edmonton and Long Beach, but struggled with massive control issues.
