Fantasy Notes: Sanchez Tops the Rocket

We’re back with more Fantasy baseball fare today, offering up Fantasy notes about Anibal Sanchez, Freddy Garcia, Brandon McCarthy, Mariano Rivera and Brian Anderson.

  • For Marlins’ fans (are there any left?) Hanley Ramirez has already provided dividends, but watching Saturday’s masterful showing by Anibal Sanchez must have really helped take the sting out of trading away Josh Beckett. Twenty-two-year Sanchez tossed seven shutout innings to beat a man almost twice his age, Roger Clemens, and pull within 340 wins of the Rocket. Sanchez has now bookended shutout efforts against the Yankees (a very big deal) and the Astros (not that big a deal) around a couple of bitch-slappings at the hands of the Red Sox and the Nats. It’s a small sample size, but he isn’t striking out enough batters and not recording enough ground balls to sustain this kind of success. Having said that, he was averaging well over a strikeout per inning at Double-A before Florida yanked this young fish out of the Southern League waters.
  • Freddy Garcia is rumoured to be on the market as the White Sox would like to add some depth to their bullpen. But after suffering a second straight loss Sunday, his value isn’t exactly skyrocketing. In his past three starts, Garcia has been shelled for 27 hits and 17 runs (16 earned) in just 18 innings. He’s given up three homers and managed just nine strikeouts. Garcia is even being dropped in some leagues, albeit, very shallow mixed leagues.
  • Don’t look for Brandon McCarthy to be spelling any of the White Sox starters in the near future, despite the rotation’s struggles of late. Manager Ozzie Guillen has said that there’s no need for any of his starters to skip a start right now, even though a couple of them couple use a break. Of course, if Garcia or perhaps Javier Vazquez is dealt, McCarthy’s value will be greatly enhanced as he’ll finally get the rotation spot he deserves.
  • Mariano Rivera bounced back from a rough outing on Friday to record a two-inning save Sunday, the 400th game he’s closed in his Hall of Fame career. We wouldn’t worry about him; Friday marked the first time Rivera had been scored on in almost a month and his ERA, almost 5.00 near the end of April is now just over 2.00. In other words, same old, same old Mo.
  • White Sox CF Brian Anderson is starting to show signs of life, hitting safely in six straight games to get his BA up to the Mendoza Line. The 24-year-old still looks like the centrefielder of the future, but Rob Mackowiak has been solid this year and shows no signs of letting up, so Anderson will be hard-pressed to earn extra PT.
