Fantasy Notes: Cairo Not the Answer

In today’s Fantasy baseball notes, we discuss Miguel Cairo‘s prospects at second base with the Yankees; Mike Mussina cooling off; and Adam Eaton‘s less than triumphant return to the mound.

  • Despite back-to-back multiple-RBI games earlier this week, Miguel Cairo cannot be viewed as a long-term option at second base for the Yanks. He has not had a multiple-hit game in almost three weeks, and with Robinson Cano‘s hamstring issues keeping him on the sidelines for another two weeks or more, New York must look to explore the trade market. Enter Wilson Betemit, a player who’s emerging as a hot commodity in trade rumours all across the majors it seems. Betemit is capable of coming off the bench or starting — and producing — at any infield position. If necessary, he could also play the outfield, and that’s certainly another area where the Yanks find themselves shorthanded right now. Heading to Atlanta would be reliever Scott Proctor, as the Braves continue to try to rework their fragile bullpen. Could be an ideal match.
  • Mike Mussina is enjoying a renaissance this season, but during his recent four-game winning streak, he’s been mediocre at best. Over the past four starts, he’s given up 24 hits and 13 earned runs in 25 IP, with four homers and six walks allowed. Mussina has managed 19 Ks over that stretch, but he’s hardly been dominant. In the three games he’s won over those four starts, the Yanks scored 11, 14 and seven runs. RotoRob might be able to win one or two of those with that kind of support.
  • Adam Eaton has finally pitched his first game for the Rangers after being out all season because of a finger issue. The start was a disaster: three runs, four walks and two hit batsmen in just 3 2/3 IP. But come on. He hadn’t pitched a real game since last year. Eaton gave up only one hit and fanned four, so there was plenty to get excited about. Give him a look. Eaton is probably gone by now in your AL-only league, but he could be an asset in a deeper mixed league, so check your waiver wires and expect a nice return down the stretch.
  • Rod Barajas has definite value in an AL-only league, but if you’re still hanging on to him in a mixed league, it’s time to seek catching help elsewhere. He’s in a 2-for-15 skid, dropping under .260 for the year. You’re better off looking at Mike Piazza, who’s likely available in a mid-sized mixed league and is playing much better of late.
  • Talk about a flair for the dramatic. Jason Giambi had been hitless in 12 straight at-bats before launching a two-run homer in the top of the ninth off Ranger closer Akinori Otsuka to propel the Yanks to a dramatic 8-7 win and the lead in an AL Wild Card race that’s suddenly very exciting. Giambi now has nine 80-RBI seasons, and he has a chance to pass his career high of 137 set in his 2000 MVP season with Oakland.
  • Andy Phillips helped save his job to some extent with a three-hit, two-RBI showing on Wednesday. He entered play in an 0-for-18 skid and had dropped below .240. If the Yanks do get Betemit (see above), Phillips, if he doesn’t snap out of it, could see some pine time courtesy of the newcomer.
  • Despite getting taken off the hook for the loss on Wednesday, Jaret Wright has been rancid his past two starts, giving up a dozen hits and nine runs (eight earned) in eight innings. He has no value in mixed leagues and the only thing keeping him in the Yankee rotation right now is that Sidney Ponson is even worse.
