The actual layout of the controller doesn’t take long to become accustomed to, but that doesn’t mean it’s always smooth sailing. The sensitivity of the left stick is a constant hassle, both with moving around and aiming your gun. Considering you’re supposed to be a stealthy bad ass, those aren’t the best areas to be having difficulty. The too-close camera further exacerbates the issues.

It all works like you’d want from a platformer. Once you get used to the rocket-pack mechanic, you’ll find yourself zooming all over the game map. The responsive controls are necessary, as the action gets in close quarters during some points, and the jump/rocket-boost/attack combination can get frantic. However, you’ll never feel like you’re out of control.

The default settings hold up fairly well, however, with accelerating/braking (R2/L2) and boosting (L1) mapped to the shoulders, and drifting/jumping (X), weapons (square) and shields (circle) on the face. You can also sideswipe other karts by flicking the right stick toward the offending vehicle. So while things are still straightforward, there’s some strategy lurking just below the surface.
