The Wire Troll: Blowing his Stack

March 29, 2008 | By RotoRob | comment on this post
Jerry Stackhouse is a hot waiver wire pickup right now.
Thanks to Disco Dirk’s injury, Jerry Stackhouse has been absolutely cooking lately. (Steven Freeman/SI)

With Jordan Frank traveling to Las Vegas this week to watch Spring Training action (read: gamble his life savings away and sample the wares of as many hookers as he can), RotoRob fills in for him on The Wire Troll.

Hot off the Wire

  • Jerry Stackhouse, SG/SF, Dallas Mavericks: Remember this old dude? Once upon a time one of the NBA’s deadliest scorers, Stackhouse has been reduced to sixth man status since arriving in Big D a few years back. Well, Stackhouse took over as the starting two-guard from Jason Terry a couple of weeks ago and now, with Dirk Nowitzki suffering an ankle sprain, Stackhouse has been stepping up offensively. He’s scored at least 17 points in each of the last four games, and he pitched in with eight boards and six assists on Thursday. Disco Dirk will miss this weekend’s action, and looks doubtful for next week, meaning Stackhouse should continue to be a valuable commodity for another few games.
  • Joel Przybilla, C, Portland Trail Blazers: Need help in boards? This dude is your man in a big way. Last Saturday, Przybilla not only pulled down a career-high 26 boards, but he scored 14 points. That kind of scoring is an anomaly for the offensively-challenged big man, but he can help in blocks (1.4 per game in past five). Since that monster effort on the glass, Przybilla has put up games of 13, 17 and nine rebounds, so he’s on a serious roll. He’s just a two-cat guy, so he’s not for everyone, but if you can take the hit in scoring and you need boards, look into Przybilla.
  • Josh Childress, SF, Atlanta Hawks: Looking for a stellar sixth man? Childress qualifies. On a deeper Hawk team, Childress isn’t getting as much PT this year, and his numbers have suffered as a result. But he’s shooting a phenomenal 59 per cent from the field, so he’s definitely taking advantage of his touches. Right now, Childress is heating up, with back-to-back games earlier this week of at least 20 points, including Wednesday’s effort in which he added five assists and four steals. If you’re seeking consistency, be prepared for a disappointment (Friday, for instance, he was limited to nine points when he shot uncharacteristically bad from both the field – 3-for-10, and the line – 3-for-8, however he did contribute with nine rebounds, three assists and a steal), but Childress is among the hottest waiver wire pickups in the NBA right now.

Send ’em Packing

  • Kendick Perkins, C, Boston Celtics: Perkins was percolating nicely at the beginning of March, but over the past few games, he’s gone stone cold, with the exception of Wednesday’s double-double. Friday, he managed just seven points and six boards, failing to block a shot in just 22 minutes of action. Leon Powe has been eating away at Perkins’ PT to an extent, and while he’s an intriguing option in deeper leagues, if I owned Perkins, I’d look at replacing him with the aforementioned Przybilla.
  • Beno Udrih, PG, Sacramento Kings: Udrih’s back injury has really knocked him off the perch as a valuable fantasy option and we’re still not sure when he’ll be back. Anthony Johnson has been starting in his place, and although he scored 13 points Friday, he’s not exciting me as a viable alternative. If you’re seeking a player who’s benefiting from Udrih’s absence, check out Francisco Garcia. He’s not going to be dropping any dimes, but with the extra PT he’s getting lately, he can help you in other ways. Friday, for instance, the former Louisville Cardinal scored 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting with seven boards, two steals, a block and three 3-pointers.
  • Chris Wilcox, PF, Seattle Sonics: Wilcox is another player who’s injury (broken pinkie) has rendered him to the scrap heap. Now that it’s been announced Wilcox is done for the year, Nick Collison’s value is assured down the stretch, making him an excellent pickup. Collison has recorded double-doubles in three of his past four, all of which have resulted in at least ten rebounds for him, including a ridiculous 21 on Wednesday to tie a career high.
