Week Seven Wide Receiver Rankings

October 20, 2007 | By Derek Jones | comment on this post

1. Terrell Owens vs. Minnesota – Quick trivia question. Who leads the NFL in drops? If your guess is Owens, you win a new car! Okay, maybe not. Nonetheless, the Cowboys will not run on the Vikings. Thus, look for them to attack Minnesota through the air with ease.

2. Randy Moss at Miami – Despite Tom Brady’s struggles with Miami’s defense over the past few seasons, look for Moss to continue his exceptional play. Just hope that Brady’s buddy, Jason Taylor, doesn’t wreak havoc.

3. T.J. Houshmandzadeh vs. NY Jets – Right now, he’s the most consistent option on a Bengals’ offense that clearly misses Rudi Johnson and has become one dimensional.

4. Plaxico Burress vs. San Francisco – Who is having a better week? Burress or Jimmy Kimmel? I’ll take Plaxico for $500. Burress is coming off of another game with a touchdown and off to the best start of his career. Even if the Niners’ secondary is improved, Burress still should be good for a score.

5. Reggie Wayne at Jacksonville – Intriguing matchup for the Colts against the run happy Jags. Wayne owns only two career touchdowns against the Jaguars (both coming in the same ’03 contest). However, with Marvin Harrison ailing a bit, Wayne may be more reliable.

6. Chad Johnson vs. NY Jets – With Johnson in the lineup, CJ has caught three touchdowns and totaled 442 yards receiving. Without Johnson, CJ has zero touchdown receptions and 136 yards in two games. Coincidence?

7. Joey Galloway at Detroit – If Kevin Curtis can smoke the Lions secondary for over 200 yards receiving and three touchdowns, it’s not a stretch to think Galloway can catch a long TD or two.

8. Larry Fitzgerald at Washington – Mr. Goldstein reminded me that just because Tim Rattay may start Sunday for Arizona, all hope is not lost. John Navarre did start for the Cardinals at one point a few seasons ago and that wasn’t a complete disaster. Rattay and/or Kurt Warner may struggle, though, against a hard-hitting Washington secondary.

9. Patrick Crayton vs. Minnesota – Much like Owens, he’s likely to prosper against Minnesota’s secondary. By the way, Crayton is responsible for the quote of the week. On the Patriots: “If they make it to Arizona, we will see them again.” As if that wasn’t enough, he went on to bash the Patriots’ defense.

Offensively, they are the real deal, Crayton said. I’m not going to lie about that. Defensively, I can tell you no. They’re not. They’re not (that good) at all.”

As moronic as it sounds, his type of honesty is greatly appreciated by this writer.

10. Marvin Harrison at Jacksonville – The Jacksonville running game may dictate how successful the Colts passing game will be. Regardless, Harrison should be able to get into the endzone. Whether he can compile big yardage numbers is another story.

11. Roy Williams vs. Tampa Bay – Williams has a tough matchup against a Tampa defense that has been stingy the past few weeks. If the Bucs D gets in Jon Kitna’s face often, don’t expect big numbers from Williams.

12. Laveranues Coles at Cincinnati – Let’s see…the Bengals’ defense can’t stop the run or cover the pass. Other than that, they are probably one of the best defensive units in the league.

13. Jerricho Cotchery at Cincinnati – See No. 12.

14. Donte Stallworth at Miami – Hey, Donte! Welcome to the ’07 season. In all seriousness, if Wes Welker and Stallworth are productive, it makes the Patriots’ pass offense hellacious. The Dolphins’ pass defense gave up three touchdowns to Braylon Edwards last week and is clearly susceptible.

15. Wes Welker at Miami – Word has it that before he left for Alabama, former Dolphins’ head coach Nick Saban basically suggested to Bill Belichick to pick up Welker. Hence, the acquisition of the brilliant slot receiver who has proven to be deadly. Way to look out for the Dolphins, Coach Saban.

16. Torry Holt at Seattle – Marc Bulger is expected to play this week, which may help Holt. However, this is assuming that Bulger’s broken ribs are healed and that he’ll have time to deliver the ball. It should be encouraging to Holt owners that Seattle looked dreadful last week against the previously winless Saints.

17. Dwayne Bowe at Oakland – After his breakout performance against San Diego, Bowe has cooled a bit. The Raiders’ secondary has been a bit inconsistent (ranked 13th) and Bowe may exploit them.

18. Kevin Curtis vs. Chicago – Outside of Brian Westbrook, Curtis is the only true gamebreaking threat the Eagles have on offense. He could be a big factor on Sunday against the Bears. Chicago defensive lineman Alex Brown said that the team’s defense should find the panic button quickly and perhaps push it. I think this bodes well for the Philly offense.

19. Anquan Boldin at Washington – He’s back! Bad situation, though.

20. Roddy White at New Orleans – Will a new quarterback help White? Byron Leftwich did not impress against the Titans two weeks ago, but the Saints’ secondary has not been good this season.

The best of the rest…
