The Wire Troll: Are You a Waiver Wire Troll?

October 4, 2007 | By James Morris | comment on this post

Well, I started out doing baseball writing for the site, but football season has come and I get the feeling that some of you faithful readers troll the wire no matter what sport you play! While the waiver wire is a good source of bye week subs at times, it also lets you jump on the next hot player before anyone else gets a chance. Just last week I flipped Brian Leonard for Marques Colston, so don’t discount the ability to snag that rental and try to flip him for something more stable. So, let’s look at who you should view as rentals or longer-term replacements.

Andre Davis: Davis is starting at WR with Andre Johnson and Jacoby Jones out. Davis had four catches for 70 yards in Week Three, then exploded for five catches, 117 yards, and a TD in Week Four. Matt Schaub really does look like a starting NFL QB and Davis is worth owning in all leagues and formats as long as he is starting. I would go pick him up now.

Gus Frerotte: Now, let me say this and be clear: rental. Frerotte is not going to be anyone’s long-term solution, but he will fill in on a Rams’ offense that’s supposed to be good, while Marc Bulger heals his rib problems. However, losing Steven Jackson, Bulger and Adam Goldberg might be more than this team can really handle. I did pick up Frerotte in a few leagues just to see if I can strike gold with byes this week (Bengals: Carson Palmer, Vikings: Tarvaris Jackson, Raiders: Dante Culpepper, Eagles: Donovan McNabb). I would say if you need a bye week fill-in you could do worse than Frerotte. I think so, anyways.

Ernest Graham: The only problem I see with recommending him is that until he can prove he is the answer to the Bucs’ problems this season, he will lose touches to Michael Pittman. I really do think that Graham will emerge as the starter at some point, as Pittman just isn’t an every down back and is more of a pass catching back at this point in his career. If you can somehow pick up Graham, with Pittman as his handcuff, that would be ideal. But, since you most likely can’t or shouldn’t, I’d go with Graham over Pittman if I am picking up a RB in that system. Pittman will get the catches, but Graham will get the goal-line carries.

Arizona Defense: Now, I know I recommended Frerotte earlier and this contradicts that pick. But, if you read closely I said I picked him up in half my leagues. Well, I picked up the Cardinals’ defense in the other half! With the problems the Rams have had early on moving the ball, this is a prime chance for the Cardinals to put up some big fantasy numbers this week. I am starting them over the Bears’ defense this week and I think you should grab them as a Week Five rental defense.
