Fantasy Notes: Sosa Far, Sosa Good
- The reports from training camp have been very favourable regarding Sammy Sosa, who’s made the Rangers squad. He’s been crushing mistakes, but is having some difficulties with breaking stuff. Better yet, his comeback has not created a circus-like environment for Texas in its first spring training in the Ron Washington era. Sosa is looking like a much better bet to take a flyer on now, but watch the final week or so of spring closely, as he will have to face pitchers who will be ratcheting up their approach when they toss their final tuneups.
- If you were hoping to see Mark Teixeira avoid another subpar first half like he had last year, there’s trouble already. The plan was to get him more at-bats than usual this spring so he’d come out of the gates quickly, but his sore knee has thrown a wrench into that. Teixeira missed a full week, and the Rangers are going to be cautious with him to make sure he’s healthy to start the year. Let’s see how things play out in April (although in fairness, Teixeira’s slump in 2006 was in May and June as opposed to April).
