Fantasy Notes: Phelps Can Still Hit
- People in these parts no doubt remember Josh Phelps, the one-time catcher, turned first basemen, turned man without a defensive position and ultimately man without a big league job. Hell he’s not even a 40-man roster player anymore. This season marked the first year since he was a young prospect in 1999 that Phelps didn’t get a single at-bat in the majors, spending the season with the Toledo Mud Huns, the Tigers’ Triple-A team. The thing is, the 28-year-old can still hit. He scored 60 runs in 126 games, smacking 26 doubles and 24 homers, driving in 90 and getting on base at a .370 clip. But not a sniff of the Show. Phelps went crazy in the playoff too, crushing four homers in nine games as the Mud Hens captured the International League championship. It’s hard to belive Phelps can’t get a job as a power-hitting bench player, but his defensive inabilities really hurt him.
