Fantasy Notes: Unit on Cruise Control

September 11, 2006 | By RotoRob | comment on this post
  • Randy Johnson turned 43 years old yesterday. So, it’s about time to set him adrift on an ice floe, right? Wait a minute. Before we send him off to mingle with the penguins, it should be noted that over his last 30 IP, Johnson has given up just 16 hits. And his strikeout rate, very un-Unit like for most of 2006, is back over one per inning recently with 16 in 15 IP for the last two starts. Johnson even pulled out his Anibal Sanchez impression in his last last, tossing six no-hit innings before finally get touched for a hit. Johnson pitches tonight in Baltimore, and while he’s been middling at Camden this season, in the three previous seasons, it was one of his favourite parks. Watch for the old guy to step it up tonight while he celebrates his birthday with another dominating show.
  • While we’re on about starting pitchers named Johnson, the Marlin’s Josh Johnson has had a pretty good campaign, but he looks to be hitting a wall. Johnson, one of three Florida rookie hurlers with at least 11 wins (all told the Marlins are 43-25 in 82 games started by freshmen), got slapped around by the Phillies on Thursday. In his last two starts, that’s 15 hits, nine runs, two homers and seven walks against Johnson in just 10 2/3 innings. He takes the mound again tomorrow night against the Mets, but it might be wise to leave Johnson on the bench and wait until the storm passes.
