Fantasy Notes: Just-in Time?

July 10, 2007 | By RotoRob | comment on this post

I haven’t filed any quick hit fantasy notes in a while, so I thought I’d check in with an update of one of baseball’s brightest current prospects and one of its brightest former prospects.

  • With Carlos Quentin getting farmed out and Scott Hairston and Jeff Salazar looking like short-term answers at best (although I still believe Hairston could surprise), it may be time for the D-Backs to dip back into their system for the answer. Just like they did when they aggressively promoted Mark Reynolds, could it be time to give Justin Upton a look? The first overall pick in the 2005 draft tore it up at High-A (.341 BA with five homers, six doubles and nine steals in 126 at-bats) before earning a promotion to Double-A. Upton is more than holding his own with 35 RBI in 52 games, and although he’s been having a tougher time on the basepaths, he’s showing patience with 20 walks. This weekend, Upton (prospect No. 23 on our Top 30 list) raised his profile even further by homering for Team USA in the Futures Game. If Arizona’s tailspin continues and it plays itself out of the race, that could expedite Upton’s arrival.
  • Anyone else notice that Dee Brown sighting last week? The one-time Royal stud prospect who had sunk back down to Double-A in recent years, had his first MLB at-bat since 2004 last Wednesday before the A’s promptly DFAed him. Now 29, Brown once looked like one of the best prospects in the game when he hit over .350 in Double-A back in 1999 at the age of 21. Brown began the year with the Arizona organization, scoring 25 runs and driving in 24 in 41 games for Triple-A Tucson before a trade to Oakland. Since landing in Sacramento, Brown is enjoying his finest stretch of Triple-A play ever, batting .284 with an 845 OPS through 116 at-bats, hence his brief recall to the Show, necessitated when Travis Buck landed on the DL. Brown’s chances of fantasy stardom have long since fallen by the wayside, but it was nice to see him get back to the bigs, even if was for barely a sip of coffee. Given that he’s scorching lefties (.394 with Sacramento), perhaps he’ll get another look in September should he continue to produce.
