Fantasy Notes: I-Rod as a Lead-off Man?
- Brian Borowski of TigerBlog fame was blogging the Tigers-Phillies game today and reported that Ivan Rodriguez was batting leadoff — a scenario he expects to be repeated during the season against left-handers. What’s this? A perennial No. 3 hitter batting at the top of the order? It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Let’s face it: I-Rod’s power has been in decline the past couple of years, and while he’s not exactly a stolen base threat, he certainly won’t clog up the basepaths either. But the most sensible reason he’d make a good choice is his .385 OBP vs. southpaws — far and away the best figure on the Tigers last year. It’s conceivable Rodriguez will score 90 runs assuming Detroit sticks with this plan, so make adjustments accordingly to his value in 5×5 leagues.
- So far, so good for Dustin Pedroia in his attempts to prove he can hit his way out of a paper bag. In yesterday’s Grapefruit League debut, the scrappy second sacker was 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk. As I discussed in the Bosox Podcast at the end of January, I think Pedroia will get the job done. A fantasy stud he won’t be, but if your league is deep enough, he’ll have value on the basis of the number of at-bats he’ll garner this season.
